I have a homecoming that never fails.
I am met with busy tongues and wagging tails.
Cheery little dances, barks and wiggles
that always give me giggles.
Eyes showing devotion that never ends
as I am greeted by my faithful furry friends.

My Sweet Otto
I looked at the little dog with matted fur
and hair hanging in his eyes.
I let him go so long without a grooming.
I told him I was sorry. It was no surprise
when he seemed to understand
that in this hectic life we're living
at times we can't keep up.
Sweet little boy, he's so forgiving.
He plastered me with kisses.
In spite of all he wagged his tail
to let me know
his love will never fail.

The Little Guardian
When I wake she's by my side.
She couldn't get closer if she tried.
On the pillow by my head.
Guarding me upon my bed.
She feels me moving in the dark.
I hear a growl, then a bark.
She looks across the unlit room
in the early pre-dawn gloom
protecting from what she perceives to be
a stranger coming after me.
I show her, after I turn on the light
the mirror reflection in the night.
She snuggles against me, then she sighs
as once more we both shut our eyes.

Six Weeks Old
The puppies are now 6 weeks old.
bundles of fur, brassy & bold.
cute as buttons, these girls and boys
as they play with each other and squeaky toys.
They do miniature Zoomies without a doubt.
Ears flying as they dart about.
Today I knew the time was here
for socks with holes to reappear
because they now are at that stage,
the needle teeth chew on everything age.
The preference seems to be my shoes
while my feet are in them, but that's no news.
As I bend down, their papers to change,
my hairdo they manage to rearrange
as well as demolishing my shoe laces.
I look at their innocent little faces.
With tears in my eyes I must face the day
when they're nine weeks old and on their way
to share their many little charms
in their new families loving arms.
Then I thank the Lord above
for loaning them to me to love.

Dogs and Cats
In a home that once was clean and neat
we have dogs and cats now under feet.
Oodles of poodles, cats, kittens and gates.
In parts of the house an abundance of crates.
More than our share of barking and noise.
A wide array of scattered toys.
Watching kittens and puppies grow
is better than any Broadway show.
There is comedy, drama, excitement galore.
How could any one possibly want for more?
They ask so little and give so much
Devotion for just a gentle touch.
